For instance, Brooks’ Muslim librarian character is based on the
real life Derviš Korkut, who risked his life to smuggle the Haggadah
away from the clutches of the Nazis. He hid it in a mosque’s library
of an Iman who lived in the country until after the war. The true
story is as tense and miraculous as the description in the novel.

It seems like each SCOPE issue we are recalling true stories of
destruction and rejuvenation of the Jewish people. We state the
Exodus in our daily prayers. We retell the release of bondage from
Egypt during our Pesach seders. In each issue of SCOPE we have
contributors add touching articles of Holocaust and rebirth.

The Jewish race is our culture. Our culture continually faces exter- National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo
mination because we continue to live in a time of anti-Semitism.
Zachor, remembering, and magid, retelling these events, we halt
the miraculous light of Jewish culture from being extinguished. It
is important to introduce books on the Holocaust to the next gen-
eration of students. Take time to watch movies such as Schindler’s
List by Steven Spielberg with your family. Have productive dialogue
about anti-Semitic words with your children and friends. Allow your
older children to discuss Jewish “hate crimes” with their peers in
their college courses. As the generation of Holocaust survivors
leaves our world, it is all too important to instill this truthful
knowledge and historic rediscovery, to everyone. Educating Jew,
Muslim, Christian…is our mission. With an educated populace, we
may someday enjoy a world filled with peace and love instead of
hate and destruction. Let us use the Haggadah as an instrument of
learning. Use it in your arsenal against anti-Semitism.

Ellen, myself and our family wish you and your family a happy, Page spread from the Sarajevo Haggadah.
