Bikur Cholim

The Great Neck Synagogue Bikur Cholim Committee comprises about twenty volunteer members who stay in touch with ill and elderly members of our synagogue.  At any time, there can be about thirty such members who are primarily home bound and who often can no longer attend synagogue services or other activities they enjoyed in the past. Our volunteers regularly communicate with those members, maintain their connections with our community, and find ways to help. We have set up meal trains, arranged transportation for medical appointments and set up home visits for those in need. Sometimes just conversation and friendship are enough and are enjoyed by both the member and our volunteer.

Before holidays, including Rosh Hashanah, Chanukah, Purim and Shavuot, we deliver gifts to members on our Bikur Cholim list to wish them a Chag Sameach, lift their spirits and ensure that they know we are thinking of them and that they continue to be an important part of our synagogue family. We also partner with the Great Neck Synagogue Youth Department before some holidays so that our young synagogue members are invited to bake and deliver goodies to learn the importance of Bikur Cholim. In addition, during the year before holidays, Rabbis Polakoff and Genack hold Lunch and Learns and Discussions at One Kensington Gate where many of our senior members live so they can easily attend and enjoy the synagogue connection.
