GNS ANNUAL ROSH HASHANA PASS IT FORWARD

FOOD INITIATIVE

THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 13, 2012

BRING THE SWEETNESS OF ROSH HASHANA TO THOSE IN NEED!

Now in its 5th year, the PASS IT FORWARD program of the GNS Hunger Initiativeprovides food to families for Yom Tov.  Last year, volunteers packed and delivered over 1000 meals to needy individuals, families, kosher food pantries and North Shore Hospital BikurCholim.

HERE’S HOW YOU CAN HELP!

Donate Food: If you have a kosher kitchen (separate meat and dairy utensils and kosher certification on all processed foods), make extra food (soup, main, side or dessert) and pack it in containers serving 4-8  (no bags please!)  Deliver it to GNSCOAT ROOM LOBBY on Thursday September 13th, between 12 and 2 pm.

Donate $$: Purchase a special meal for a $15 contribution from Mazurs, Great Neck Glatt or Everfresh, which will be delivered on your behalf.  Or make a donation directly to the GNS Hunger Initiative.

Donate Time: We need packers (from 11 am to 5 pm) and drivers for about 20 different routes, starting from 3:00 to 5:30 pm on Thursday September 13th, starting at GNS Coat Lobby.

Donate Creativity:   Have your child create a special handmade Rosh HaShana card to be enclosed in the food delivery.

ALL VOLUNTEERS PLEASE EMAIL CINDY HODKIN: koshercookinggn@gmail.com

IN MEMORY of HELENE

THE LAW OF SHELUACH HAKAN, SENDING AWAY THE MOTHER BIRD IS A WELL KNOWN, BUT NOT WELL UNDERSTOOD MITZVAH. WE ARE PROMISED IMPORTANT REWARDS IF WE PERFORM IT. ONE REWARD IS LONG LIFE. THE OTHER IS CHILDREN FOR A BARRON WOMAN.

THE LAW STATES THAT IF YOU CHANCE UPON A NEST WITH A KOSHER BIRD SITTING ON OR HOVERING OVER HER CHICKS OR EGGS, YOU MUST CHASE AWAY THE MOTHER BIRD BEFORE YOU TAKE THE EGGS OR THE CHICKS. YOU MUST CHASE HER AWAY EVEN ONE HUNDRED TIMES, SO SHE IS SPARED SEEING THE CHICKS TAKEN AWAY.

THE RAMBAN SAYS THAT THIS MITZVAH IS MEANT TO SENSITIZE US TO MERCY. IF WE CARE ABOUT THE FEELINGS OF A MOTHER BIRD. THEN CERTAINLY, WE SHOULD SHOW MERCY AND COMPASSION TO HUMANS.

THERE ARE TWO WEAKNESSES WITH THIS POSITION. FIRSTLY, IS IT MERCIFUL TO CHASE AWAY THE MOTHER BIRD? SHE COMES BACK TO AN EMPTY NEST IN PANIC NOT KNOWING WHAT HAPPENED TO HER YOUNG. SHE FLIES AROUND FRANTICALLY LOOKING FOR THEM. IS THIS MERCIFUL? SECONDLY, WE ALREADY HAVE ANOTHER LAW THAT TEACHES US MERCY TO ANIMALS: ONE IS NOT TO SLAUGHTER A MOTHER AND ITS (CHILD ANIMAL) ON THE SAME DAY (FOR EATING). WHY DO WE NEED TWO LAWS TO TEACH THE SAME THING ? THE SECOND COMMONLY GIVEN REASON FOR THIS MITZVAH IS FOR PRESERVATION OF THE SPECIES. IF YOU TAKE BOTH MOTHER AND CHICKS AWAY, IT WILL BE HARD TO PROCREATE ENOUGH BIRDS TO SUSTAIN THE SPECIES. THIS APPROACH ALSO HAS WEAKNESS. MOST COMMENTARIES TO THE TORAH TELL US THAT ONE MUST TAKE THE EGGS OR CHICKS EVEN IF HE HAS NO USE FOR THEM. IF THE LAW WAS TO PRESERVE THE SPECIES WHY NOT LIMIT THE NUMBER OF EGGS/CHICKS ONE CAN TAKE, OR AT LEAST NOT REQUIRE SOMEONE TO TAKE ALL THE EGGS/ CHICKS, EVEN WHEN HE DOES NOT NEED THEM THE THIRD REASON GIVEN IS A CHASIDISH APPROACH. WE ARE MAKING A PLEA TO HASHEM: LOOK AT THE MOTHER BIRD FLYING AROUND IN PAIN AND PANIC BECAUSE SHE LOST HER OFFSPRING AND SEES AN EMPTY NEST. BY INFERENCE YOU TOO HASHEM SHOULD REALIZE YOUR NEST THE HOLY TEMPLE IS EMPTY, NONE OF YOUR CHILDREN ARE THERE. WE USE THIS MITZVAH TO PLEAD WITH G-D TO BRING US BACK AND REBUILD THE TEMPLE AS THE MOTHER BIRD WHO FRANTICALLY WISHES TO RECOVER HER OFFSPRING AND HOME.

WHEN A KOSHER MOTHER BIRD IS SITTING ON HER NEST TO PROTECT HER EGGS AND CHICKS, SHE DOES HER VERY BEST                                                                                                                                                                  THERE IS A TORAH LAW TO TAKE THE CHICKS BUT LEAVE THE BIRD ABOUT THIS LAW THERE IS SPECIAL CHASIDISH TORAH WORD WHEN SHE COMES BACK TO THE NEST HER ANGUISH HAS BEGUN THE NEST IS EMPTY VOID OF EGGS OF CHICKS, NOT EVEN ONE. WE PRAY AND HOPE THE HOLY ONE WILL ACT TO US THIS WAY WILL MISS US AND WILL PINE FOR US, BRING NEAR MOSHIACH’S DAY LORD ON THAT DAY RETURN US ALL YOUR SONS AND DAUGHTERS TOO TO OUR NEST, YOUR TEMPLE MOUNT, WHERE WE CAN PRAY TO YOU
