Beshalach: Dr. Mark Gersten
January 31, 2012
THE JEWS SURROUNDED ON EACH SIDE
INDEED THERE WAS NO PLACE TO HIDE
FOUR GROUPS IN TURN RAISED UP THEIR VOICE
EACH TOLD THE OTHERS OF THEIR CHOICE
ONE PLAN WAS PRAY NOW TO HASHEM
FOR HE WOULD HELP US FLEE FROM THEM
THE SECOND WAS TO STAND AND FIGHT
THE THIRD WAS YIELD TO EGYPT’S MIGHT
AND RETURN AS SLAVES ONCE MORE
THE HAGGUDAH TELLS US OF FOUR SONS
A PLAN DOES REPRESENT EACH ONE
THE SIMPLE SON KNOWS YOU MUST PRAY
WHEN STRESS OR DANGER COMES YOUR WAY
WITH SOMEONE COMING TO KILL YOU
DON’T ASK QUESTIONS THAT’S PLAN TWO
TO SAVE YOURSELF JUST DO WHAT’S RIGHT
DEFEND YOURSELF DON’T DIE BUT FIGHT
THE EVIL SON FAITHLESS AND VILE
WOULD RETURN TO EGYPT’S NILE
GIVE UP FREEDOM, SERVING G-D
RETURN TO WORK BACKBREAKING, HARD
THE SON WHOSE RIGHTEOUS WISE AND GOOD
WOULD CROSS THE SEA HE KNOWS HE SHOULD
TO FIRST REACH SINAI THEN OUR LAND
FOR THAT HE KNEW WAS G-D’S COMMAND

FINAL SPRING 2012 FILM ~ Monday, June 4, 7:30pm
The Matchmaker
followed by discussion with Isaac Zablocki, Director of Film Programs and Israel Film Center,
JCC in Manhattan
From one of Israel’s most popular directors, and nominated for 5 Israeli Academy Awards! In this coming-of-age tale set in 1968 Haifa, restless 16-year-old Arik lands an exciting summer job for the mysterious marriage broker, Yankele Bride, a Romanian Holocaust survivor. Working from an office in back of a seedy movie theater that only shows love stories, Arik encounters a host of diverse colorful characters, misfits, and shattered Holocaust survivors. Arik opens his eyes to a changing Israel and experiences his first love as he falls in love with Tamara, who has just returned from America and is full of talk of women’s rights, free love and rock and roll, in this poignant and humorous. Avi Nesher’s latest film mixes comedy with drama as it tells a coming-of-age story unlike any you’ve ever seen before.

Considered an expert on Islamic law and its intersection with Islamic terrorism and national security, David Yerushalmi authored the principal critical scholarship on sharia-compliant finance, published in the Utah Law Review (2008, Issue 3). Yerushalmi also designed and co-authored a ground-breaking peer reviewed investigation on sharia-adherence and the promotion of violent, jihadist literature in U.S. mosques, published in the Middle East Quarterly (Summer 2011). This research and scholarship on sharia was earlier the focus of a 2008 monograph published by the McCormick Foundation and the Center for Security Policy entitled, “Shariah, Law and ‘Financial Jihad’: How Should America Respond?”. In 2010, Mr. Yerushalmi participated as a co-author of a seminal work on counter-terrorism and drafted what has become known as the American Laws for American Courts Act, which was enacted into law by several states and is pending in many others. Yerushalmi has been interviewed and profiled in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, Reason Magazine, and appeared on local, national, and international radio and television programs. His writings have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, National Review, First Things, the American Thinker, The Intellectual Conservative, the Jerusalem Post, among many others. In 2011, he was named by The Forward as one of America’s 50 most impactful Jews.

Due to liability concerns and on the advice of the Fire Department, we will no longer be hosting a communal chometz burning on erev Pesach. The safest way to burn your chometz is by using your barbeque grill. There will also be no garbage disposal at the synagogue that morning and all members are encouraged to dispose of their garbage in the normal way and place the garbage cans by the street before Pesach begins, disclaiming any ownership of that garbage. The parking lot will be closed following services on erev Pesach morning.
