Chometz after Pesach

April 3, 2013

The issue of where chometz can be purchased after Pesach has become more complicated as a result of the varied supply procedures of different supermarket chains, as well as our practical inability to identify which chometz products belonged to whom and when.

It is for that reason that I encourage our members to purchase chometz from the local stores in our community that are under hashgacha. Doing so will avoid any possible questions concerning chometz that was owned by a Jew over Pesach.

Those wishing to buy chometz items from the various supermarket chains will have to rely on the principle of safek derabanan lekula, namely that we are lenient when it comes to resolving doubts concerning rabbinic prohibitions. The doubt is perhaps the chometz I am now buying was owned by a Jewish distributor during Pesach even though the store itself is owned and managed by non-Jews.

The following stores have appeared on various Kashrut organizations lists as acceptable after Pesach:

7-Eleven
BJ’s
CVS
Costco
Duane Reade
K-Mart
Petco
Petsmart
Rite-Aid
Sams Discount Warehouse
Trader Joe’s
Walgreens
Walmart
(end of list)

Regarding supermarkets, A & P, Associated, D’Agastino, Food City, Food Emporium, Gristedes, Key Food, Pathmark, Waldbaums and Whole Foods are owned by non-Jews, however many of them are supplied by the Jewish owned C & S Distributors. Fairway is Jewish owned and presents its own complications. Please speak to Rabbi Polakoff concerning Fairway or any other store not on this list. He can be reached at rabbi@gns.org, or at 516-487-6100.
